Highland Fling – August 19-20, 2017


World Amateur Highland Games Championship: Saturday, August 19th

Come be a spectator in celebration of Scottish and Celtic culture with the Highland Games! The 11th Annual World Amateur Highland Heavy Games Championships will be held on Saturday in Shepherd’s Green with the top ten amateurs from across the nation competing. The best will claim the World Amateur Title and the opportunity to earn their professional status in the sport.

10:00am-12:00pm: Hammer Throw, Stone of Strength, Weight for Distance

2:00pm-4:00pm: Caber Toss, Sheaf Toss, Weight for Height


Minnesota State Highland Games & Midwest Women’s Highland Games: Sunday, August 20th

Join in the tradition of Scottish history with men and women from across the Midwest as they compete in the Highland Games. Cheer on your favorite contestants as they compete in strength and endurance challenges. Let the games begin Sunday in Shepherd’s Green!

Keg Toss

Think you have what it takes to be a Highland Gamer? Test your strength at the keg toss that is held daily at 1:30pm on Shepherd’s Green.


The Minnesota Scottish Celtic Dance Association (MSCDA)

 

The MSCDA is a volunteer-led organization in Minnesota that is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Scottish Highland dance, culture, and community.


The Northerly Gales

The Northerly Gales is a Twin Cities-based Celtic/Americana quartet. From Jimmy and Tamara’s soaring pipes and fiddle to Randy and Danny’s driving rhythm, the Gales are always ready to rock. Whether you’re looking to tap your feet, forget your troubles, or just share a pint over some great tunes, look no further than The Northerly Gales.


Sponsor of Scotch Egg Eating Contest – Claddagh Pub

Join us daily to eat a classic Scottish treat as fast as you can! Participants race to eat as many Scotch Eggs as fast as they can for wonderful prizes in this fan favorite event, sponsored by Claddagh Irish Pub.

Scottish Village Vendors

Visit the Scottish Village vendors in Shepherd’s Green to find all your Scottish needs including kilts, apparel, pins and badges. Also in the Scottish Village you will be able to find your own Scottish roots, join a clan and purchase one-of-a-kind jewelry.


Kilt Competition

Got Scottish pride and a competitive spirit? Show off those legs or cheer loud for your favorite contestant in the daily Kilt Competition. Enjoy Scottish dress as we search for the Best Kilt in the Realm! Held daily on the Pavilion Stage at 3:30pm.


Mural Competition

Show off your creativity and artistic skills by painting and submitting a unique Renaissance-themed mural! If you have ever dreamed of creating a work of ART and having it displayed to the public, then this is the perfect opportunity for you!

The murals that will be entered into the competition will be hung up and presented to the public, so that everyone who enters the festival will witness your craft!

Free to enter and you will receive 2 free admission tickets for participating.

Rules:

  1. Murals can be dropped off at the following times
    • Friday, August 18th from 12 – 5pm
    • Opening Weekend, August 19th & 20th at the Information Booth
  2. All murals should be dropped off at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival Site. Use the entrance off HWY 41. There will be signs directing you to where they need to be dropped off.
  3. Be sure your name and age is in the bottom right corner of your mural.
  4. Your tickets will be at Will Call (outside of King’s Gate) under the name on your application for you to pick up.

Grand Prize: $250 cash, a 2018 Season Pass and a Renaissance T-shirt

Deadlines: Forms MUST be in by August 18th. Murals MUST be in no later than August 19th.
