Artisan Appreciation – Tread Light Gear

Laura Reynolds is the skilled woman behind Tread Light Gear. For sixteen years, she has been handcrafting custom moccasins, sandals, and leather gear. The leather used is tanned by a family operated tannery in the US that strives to have the most environmentally conscious leather possible. Laura is proud to not use toxic glues and instead guarantees her hand stitching.

When asked how long it usually takes to make a pair of moccasins, Laura explains, “The first pair took 3 days, had to be taken apart and redone. After 16 years? Well…They vary from 4 hours to….3 days. And there are still times when something gets stitched upside down, backwards or just plain wrong-O! But, that’s okay, right?”

Laura’s favorite creations have been an owl boot with secret pockets and feathers and her Evolution Forest Knee High boots (they feel as if you’re wrapped up in the forest).

Laura explains why she enjoys working with the Minnesota Renaissance Festival by saying,”It’s so very much fun. The incredible displays of creativity and weirdness just tickle me to the bone. When I was young, I sold Florentine Ice (remember those?!) at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival for years. I remember wishing to work for the crafters so badly. Back then, I never even dreamed that I would, eventually, own my own booth! May all of our dreams be so out-shot by reality!”

Laura wants her customers to know that she appreciates the gratitude and love she receives in her booth. It warms her heart to know that people love what she makes.

Make sure to visit Tread Light during the Festival and try on the most comfortable pair of shoes you’ve ever worn!
